This year’s commemorative fine arts poster, Rivers of Babylon by Hillary Butler, captures both the energy of the river and the vibrancy of our community. An abstract landscape painted in acrylic on paper, the piece was inspired by the city’s connection to the Mississippi River. The sweeping black swirl at the top evokes the river itself, with the intuitive process that I use brings focus to color by layering translucent paints to create depth, movement, and harmony. With seafoam and green tones leading the palette, the work reflects my fascination with how color can sing when carefully pushed, pulled, and balanced on the canvas.
